SBA Endorses UCLA Law Principles of Community

In recognition that our community is comprised of individuals of different socioeconomic backgrounds, races, religions, gender identities and personal experiences each of us has an obligation to the community of which we have chosen to be a part. In light of our diverse backgrounds, the successful conduct of the university's affairs requires that every member of the law school community acknowledge and practice the following basic principles:

· We believe that diversity is critical to maintaining excellence in all of our endeavors.

· We are committed to the right of freedom of expression within our community and affirm our commitment to the highest standards of civility, tolerance and decency towards all. We seek to promote dialogue, open expression of our distinct individual opinions, view points and identities within the bounds of professionalism, consideration, courtesy, sensitivity and respect.

· We recognize modern society carries historical and deep-rooted misunderstandings and divisive biases but strive to maintain a basic standard of professionalism marked by respect and consideration of individual differences and various life experiences.

· We do not tolerate acts or manifestations of discrimination, including those based on race, ethnicity, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, religious or political beliefs, status within or outside the university, or any of the other differences that exist within our community. We recognize and value the richness of having a diverse community, strive for inclusivity and take pride in our various contributions and achievements.

 Highlights from SBA Town Hall

On March 7, 2011, SBA hosted a Town Hall where students were invited to voice concerns regarding their law school experience and administrators were available to provide direct responses to their concerns. It was a very successful event that brought numerous issues to the attention of administration and, in some instances, produced concrete results. Below is a list of highlights from the event:

  • Library is now open at 11am on Sundays; The main reading room will now also be open during 'after hours', in addition to the After Hours Reading Room
  • Couches in the library and student lounge were cleaned over Spring Break
  • A complete survey of lamp lights in the library was conducted over Spring Break and replacements have been ordered; Broken lamps will be repaired after finals; Lamps will be checked 2-3 times a year rather than just once from now on
  • New initiatives by the Office of Career Services include:
    • calling over 400 private sector employers directly regarding their hiring needs
    • sending over 500 resume books to mid-sized/small firms
    • sending practice-oriented resume books to over 100 employers in designated "hot" substantive areas
    • facilitating intimate breakfast networking sessions between 3Ls and practitioners in particular substantive areas
    • creating the Career Action Program designed specifically for 3Ls
